THE PROGRAM

Words over Weapons
Reduce violence and build peace amongst young people in South Africa

The Words over Weapons program equips young people with alternatives to violence and conflict in their lives, e.g. conflict prevention and management training alongside interpersonal skills for their future. It is about both short term and long term peace building.

The program content in an e-learning environment contains information cartoons, discussion exercises and the comic strip maker. It follows a day in the life of a South African teenager. It consists of nine lessons concluded by a peer event. It can be implemented in your school by excellent young people who have been trained to work with educators. The educational methodology supports interactive and experiential learning while building on learners basic and creative computer skills. The program is in line with the curriculum for Life Orientation as set out by the Department of Education.

Words over Weapons is a program by Phaphama Initiatives, Butterfly Works (NL) and Landelijke Stichting Tegen Zinloos Geweld (NL) funded by Oxfam Novib. Phaphama Initiatives runs the program in high schools in close collaboration with the Department of education in South Africa. The implementation started in 2007 in schools in the Gauteng- Province.
