Goal
orange-dot.gifLearners reflect on and become aware of how culture is used to either limit or support gender violence.

Guidelines
Have a debate in your class about the following topic:

"Our cultural traditions, values and practices are useful in teaching us how to respect ourselves and one another."

step1.gif
Divide the class into two teams. One team will be defending the statement and the other will be arguing against it.
If the class is very big you could also divide the group into 4 teams.

step2.gif
Ask the groups to prepare their arguments. Give them 5 minutes to do so.

step3.gif
Explain the rules of the debate to the group:
  • The debate starts and ends at a set time.
  • When you want to make a comment/argument you raise your hand.
  • Only speak when the facilitator says it is your turn.
  • Don't interrupt your fellow learners.
  • Don't make any personal remarks about the other learners.
  • No swearing.
You can come up with more or other rules together with the group.

step4.gif
Start the debate. Make sure that all learners get a chance to speak.

step5.gif
When the time is finished end the debate. Decide which team has won. Make sure that you have based your decision on the arguments you have heard and the debating skills of the learners.

step6.gif
Evaluate the debate with the class. Ask quetions like:
  • How did it feel to defend/argue against a statement, that might not be your own opinion?
  • Did you hear arguments that made you change your mind?
  • Did you learn anything new?
  • What was the best arguement you've heard?
