Make a postcard (30 mins)

Goal
orange-dot.gifLearners get encouraged to join in the fight against gender violence.
orange-dot.gifLearners understand the extent of gender violence by translating percentages into numbers within a specified community.

Guidelines
Today the learners are going to make a postcard, to be sent to the President urging him to increase efforts in the fight against gender violence.

step1.gif
First ask the learners to look at slide 19 of the info cartoon. Let the learners think about what these percentages really mean? To help them understand these figures, look at what it would mean in your class:

  1. If there are 20 girls in your class, for example, and 25% of them have suffered physical abuse, how many girls have been victims of physical abuse?
  2. How many have suffered emotional abuse?
  3. How many have suffered from domestic violence?

According to these figures, the answers are as follows:

  1. 5 girls have suffered physical abuse (divide the total number of girls by 4 to get your answer).
  2. 8 girls have suffered emotional abuse (divide the total number of girls by 2,5).
  3. 16 girls have suffered from domestic violence (divide the total number of girls by 1,25).

step2.gif
Once the learners have worked out the numbers, ask them how it makes them feel knowing that so many of the girls have suffered in this way. Also think about why these figures are so high in our country.

step3.gif
Now ask the learners to prepare their message: "What do you want to see happening in the fight against gender violence? What can the government do, to either help people affected by this violence or to help prevent more gender violence? "

step4.gif
Let the learners type their text in Ms Word, using Word Art and different fonts, sizes and colours, or in any other program on the computer. They can also work on paper.
