Working together (5 mins)

Goals
This game builds group sensitivity, concentration and the capacity to let others also have their turn.
(This links nicely to the kinds of attitudes that are required in a classroom to make learning a success for everyone.)

Guidelines
In this game the class has to count to 20 as a group and they have to follow certain rules.

The rules are:
They cannot count in any particular order in the class e.g. in rows.
They cannot speak other than to call out a number.
Only one person can speak at a time.
If two or more people call out the same number at once, the group must start with “1” again.
They cannot communicate with each other, even non-verbally.

Tip: Usually the counting has to start over several times before the group begins to concentrate intensely. Let the group know that they do not need to rush their counting; it is OK to have long pauses between numbers. And they will be most successful if they can become sensitive to one another and watch carefully to see who will be calling a number next.
