Self-discipline (30 mins)
GoalsGuidelines
Tell learners to choose one task that they commit themselves to doing every day for the next week. It shouldn't be a task that they enjoy doing, or that they are already doing e.g. watching television.
Examples of tasks could be:
- Getting up 30 minutes earlier every morning to do some exercise or have some quiet time with yourself.
- Agreeing to do a home chore that you do not usually do.
- Visiting and helping a sick or old person in your neighbourhood.
- Helping a classmate or a younger learner in your school with his/her school work.
Tell students to decide on a time when they will be able to do this every day. It will be easier to uphold the commitment to the activity, if you do it at the same time every day.
Get a few students to tell the group what they have chosen to do.
Tell students to keep a journal where, every day, they write down:
- What they did.
- Any new experiences they had with the activity.
- How they felt about doing it.
- What they are learning about themselves in the process.
Ask the learners in the next lesson how it went. Ask some learners to share what they have written in their journal about the experience. Ask the learners if they have understood more about self-discipline and developing more discipline in their lives.
