EXCHANGE I

Making your comic strip
Today the learners are going to make a comic strip online. This is the first part of the exchange with learners in Holland. With the comic maker you can make digital comics. The tool is specifically developed for learners, to tell your stories in a creative way. Here you can download a manual on the comic maker itself.

There are all sorts of interactive options in the comic maker, you can:
- make a comic
- send your comic to someone through e-mail
- print the comic
- react on each others’ comics.

For this exchange with Dutch learners via the comic strip perform the following steps:

step1.gif
The class will be divided into 10 groups.
Think of a group name with the people in your group.

step2.gif
Each group is going to make a comic about a conflict situation. You have 10 minutes to come up with a conflict situation that you think is typical for young people in South Africa. It can be something that you've experienced yourselves or something you have heard about.

Each group sits in front of one computer and goes to the comic maker by

Go to ‘Make comic strip’ and create the group profile under ‘register’, it is important that you follow all the steps. Ask your educator what to fill in exactly!

orange-dot.gifUnder nickname fill in your group name plus the number of your group that you were given
orange-dot.gifUnder login name fill in your group name.
orange-dot.gifFor e-mail address ask your educator

Now you are in the comic maker and you can make a comic.
Under ‘help' you will find information about how the comic maker works.

Create a comic about the conflict your group came up with in step 2. The comic should consist of 5 frames. The comic should only show a conflict/problem situation. You don’t have to give the solution or resolve the conflict.

Divide the story in five scenes.
Decide as a group:
* Where exactly does it takes place, e.g. in the bus, locker room, outside the school gate etc.?
* Who was involved? Describe each main person in your story; give them names, ages and descriptions.
* What happened?
* How did the people react to what had happened?

step6.gif
When your group has finished 5 frames in the comic maker, you make one last frame in which the characters ask the viewer to respond.
Let the characters ask:
- Do you recognise this situation?
- How would you resolve this conflict?

step7.gif
When you finished your comic you can click on ‘test’, give the comic a title and then publish.
Then the comic is published and everyone can see it and react to it. The learners in the Netherlands will also look at your comic and give their reaction on it.
